Ritva Järvimäki-Kansanaho's journey into the world of sewing began in Jämsänkoski where she trained as a Model Garment Maker. After that she continued her studies in Hämeenlinna at the Wetterhoff Handicraft and Design Institute, graduating as a Clothing Artisan. From there, Ritva started working in the industry straight away, and sewing has been a part of her life ever since.
A versatile and dynamic job
Ritva has been working in Ommellinen’s clothing production since 2020. Her tasks include sewing with a lockstitch machine and an overlocker, as well as flattening and cutting products for production. Occasionally Ritva also gets the opportunity to model clothes and participate in various events, which is a fun aspect of the Ommellinen team’s dynamic work environment.
‘The best thing about my job is its constant variety; no two days are the same! Patterns, colours and product lines change quickly bringing new excitement, purpose and interest to my work,’ Ritva describes.
Ritva particularly enjoys tasks that require precision and concentration. She finds great joy in completing more challenging sewing tasks and the sense of achievement that comes with them.
‘I’ve also noticed how colours add a special touch to my work, and I actually call it 'colour therapy'! At Ommellinen there are so many colours and it’s wonderful to work with them every day,’ Ritva says.
One of the highlights of working at Ommellinen, according to Ritva, is the great team.
‘Ommellinen has a close-knit community of like-minded people, where colleagues are supportive, and collaboration runs smoothly. Many team members have worked here for years, which speaks about the strong team spirit,’ Ritva explains.
Among all Ommellinen's patterns, one of Ritva’s favourites is ‘Babushka Roses’, designed by Elina Antila. This pattern has been part of Ommellinen’s collection since the very beginning and has seen countless colour variations. Another favourite is called ‘Pitko’, which was introduced last autumn. Ritva particularly loves graphic and abstract patterns.
Ritva’s advice for getting started with sewing
Ritva has encouraging words for those interested in sewing but who might feel a bit hesitant about starting.
‘If you’re nervous about starting to sew, it might be a good idea to find a friend who already knows how to do it. You could even organise a sewing night together, and in this way, you’d have someone nearby to ask for help when needed. It’s worth taking the plunge and just going for it, as hands-on practice is the best way to learn,” Ritva encourages.
Ommellinen’s sewing patterns are very user-friendly and come with instructional videos to help beginners take their first steps. Additionally, customers are always welcome to visit Ommellinen’s sewing workshop in Kinkomaa, where they can receive advice and guidance on sewing-related matters!
Is sewing making a comeback?
According to Ritva, sewing and knitting have gained new popularity, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The growing awareness of sustainable development has also influenced changes in consumer habits.
For beginners, Ritva recommends starting with a simple project that quickly provides a sense of accomplishment. She also emphasises the importance of being kind to oneself, as sewing may involve unfamiliar terms at first, but everything can be learned!
